A Friday...

Do you remember the difficult time we had passing the music test awhile back? The one where Caity didn't get that 2 beats on one note is a "TiTi" and that music gradually getting slower is called "ritardando?" It took us teaching that lesson 3 times for it to all sink in. It didn't make me real excited to keep teaching music and we got about 5 lessons behind.

Today seemed like a good day to just have a music lesson marathon. We went through 3 lessons and she mastered all of them with 100%. We covered Pitch and Rhythm, Stick notation (more of those "tas" and titis") and a lesson called "High is called So, Low is called Mi."

The K12 curriculum sent us all kinds of things for music class. We have 3 different CD's - one is "Let's Sing", another is "Let's Listen" and there is "Let's Learn Rhythm." We also received a DVD called "Let's Learn About Music." There is a teacher's manual and a songbook as well as a tamborine and a slide whistle. Lots of good stuff!

But the songs are....let's just say they are interesting choices. Now any of you out there that know me - know that I know A LOT of songs. But I don't know ANY of the songs we are using. This is really unbelievable to me. And some of these songs are weird....yes....weirder than the songs I already knew!

Let me share:

We frequently use "Pizza Pizza" - it goes: Judith has a boyfriend/Pizza, Pizza, Daddy-0/How do you know it?/Pizza, Pizza, Daddy-0/'Cause she told me/Pizza, Pizza, Daddy-o/Let's Rope it!/Pizza, Pizza, Daddy-o/Let's Throw it!/Pizza, Pizza, Daddy-o/Let's end it!

Interesting - don't really get what roping has to do with pizza at all.

Here is another called "Fudge, Fudge": Fudge, fudge, call the judge/Mamma's gonna have a baby/Not a girl, not a boy/Just a plain old baby./Wrap the diaper up in tissue,/Throw it down the elevator./First floor, stop!/Second floor, stop!/Third floor, you better not stop 'cause H-O-T spells hot!

I'm not making this up! Don't you think they are odd? And today we sang about "Old Roger is dead and he lies in his grave." The song goes on to explain that they planted an apple tree over his head, apples fell down, an old woman came to pick them up, Old Roger gave her a thump and the old woman went hippety-hop. Just plain odd.

Caity doesn't seem to find these disturbing at all...she hasn't had any nightmares about it. And today was a musical success, as far as grades go - so if I was "drawing conclusions" (ha!) - I'm thinking...whatever works.
